Insight 79: Why torture ourselves?

Isn't it weird how human beings try to make themselves as unhappy as they can with jobs they can do without, with lifestyles they are not agreeable with and rules and conditions that causes them grief?

Why do people still think suffering is the way to go to achieve the ultimate goal that will make them happy? Such irony is and has always been haunting us to this day. Most of the people I meet are unhappy one way or the other. Some to the extreme of wanting out of existence and some prefer brood on the remaining days of their lives. I find this understanding, this perception ridiculous and at the same time astounding because everyone knows this but no one wants to do anything about it.

If you enjoy a certain kind of music, if you prefer to live with nature, if you like to be alone, if you love to always give a helping hand, then why not? If that makes you happy then why don't you just go out and do just that? But someone told me shopping makes her happy. Well, if that is your desire then you have to find a way to make the money so that you can shop till you drop.

Then again, our level of happiness changes with time. If small treats used to make us happy once I'm quite sure we would have grown out of it by now. The treats get bigger and larger as we grow older and then it comes to a point where we go back to the small things. The small things like sitting on a swing, walking arm in arm with someone you love, listening to the birds sing in the backyard, bringing joy to others and daydreaming lying on our backs looking at the clouds go passing by on top of a hillside.

We have to come out of the trance before we can realize that happiness and joy is a bigger deal than to torture ourselves for an entire lifetime just to enjoy them on our deathbeds.
